Thoughts of a Military Child: Moving Day

MOVING DAY

School has been out for a while now, and we are getting ready for something big. You see, last month, Mommy told us that we will soon be going to another base because of her job. And today, she came home from work and said, “Let’s get started!” Started with what you ask?

MOVING DAY!!!!!

We are getting ready for the moving men to come and pack away all our things so that we can move to another city. Things such as our television, our clothes, and even our toys! Daddy said that I can keep a few things with me, but not too many. This makes me sad, but I know that in just a few weeks, I will get them back at our new house. Once the packers are done, they put all the boxes in a big moving truck and drive away. Now our house is empty.

When we are done, we have to say good-bye to all of our friends. Mommy gave me an address that they can use for now, and I got all of their telephone numbers, so we can still write and talk on the phone. Then we are off to start our vacation!! You see, our new house is on the other side of the country. Since we are going to drive there Mommy and Daddy decided that we would stop to see and do so many things along the way.

We will get to stay in hotels, and see many new and exciting places. Places like funny restaurants, really big parks with so many trees and mountains in them, and maybe even an amusement park or two!! I really do like when we get time like this, because we have so much fun and nothing takes Mommy away while she is with us.

*******

Sooner than we thought, our trip is over, and we are in our new town. We quickly found out where our new house is and went right to it. Once again, it is empty. But, that won’t last for long, because tomorrow, the movers will be here again!! That means that we get all of our things back, like our television, all of our clothes, and best of all…
OUR TOYS!!!!

Guess what the best thing was about this move? The second day we were here, I got some mail from a friend that I just left. She wrote this for school about her daddy, and she thought I would like to read it as well. I will even share with you what it said.

How the U.S. Military Affects Me
The U.S. Military has affected my life in many different ways. Some ways it has affected my life is through travel and new friends and it has given me inspiration. Without the U.S. Military, my life would be very different.
Traveling is a big part of my life. I have lived in six states in the past eleven years. The reason we travel a lot is because my dad is in the U.S. Navy. Traveling is fun and exciting because you get to see different places. It is also hard to travel because you leave your environment, but sooner or later you will get used to your new surroundings.
Making friends is also an effect the U.S. Military has on me. Although it is hard to leave friends and make new friends you will get through it. I have had to make and leave many friends, but I still keep in touch with them. Making friends improves your self-esteem and your attitude.
The U.S. Military has inspired me. It taught me to never give up and to never give in. The U.S. Military also taught me to do what you have to do whether you like it or not. My dad is in the U.S. Navy, and he always tries his hardest and his best. I know that to achieve my goals I must believe in myself and I learned this from my father.
The U.S. Military has affected my life forever. Making new friends, being inspired, and traveling are just some ways it has affected me. I know the U.S. Military will continue to affect me throughout my life.

I was really happy that she sent it to me, because she said everything I feel. And now, since we have a whole new house to live in, a new town to discover, and new friends to meet, I think I will really like this place!

The essay in my story (which is unaltered in its entirety) was written by twelve-year-old Lyndsay Crandall. Her family is stationed at Saulley Field, NETPDTC, Pensacola, FL, where she is a 6th grader at Bellview Middle School. She wrote the essay as an assignment for Military Appreciation, “because I have enjoyed my life as a Navy daughter, and I admire my dad and the job he does.” Many thanks to you, Lyndsay, and all the best to you in the future!!
