Thoughts of a Military Child: Spring-ing Into Summer

Spring-ing Into Summer

It is Easter weekend, and being Good Friday, I have no school today. Daddy and I are making butterflies and flowers to decorate the house. You see, it snowed last week and he thinks it was the last one for this winter.

“Well, the first sign,” he says, “are the brilliant purple crocuses popping up through the snow. Then, the snow-starts to melt, and the sun is out more often. Another way to tell is when the days start to get longer and warmer.” (That makes me want to play outside more often instead of doing my homework and chores!) Daddy also told me there are buds on the trees that will bring new leaves in a few weeks. Spring is surely on its way!

Since the weather is nicer, Gramma and Pap-pap are visiting! We always have so much fun when they are here, and they always have a special surprise, just for me! This morning, we went on base to visit the Easter Bunny and hunt for eggs. I told him all the things I would like for Easter, but those are secrets I don’t tell anyone else. I also found seven eggs that were filled with toys and stickers.

Next, we went over to the Commissary to buy all of our eggs. Tomorrow, even though Mommy has duty, we are all going to color the eggs. I am going to color her a very special one, and place it in a basket that I made at school. That way, she knows that, even though she can’t be here, I still love her!

Easter morning, we all rush to see what was left in our baskets, and hunt for all the eggs. Then, it is off to the base chapel. Gramma told me that it is a very special service that should help us remember the real reason of Easter. But, they also take time to remember those who have served our country in the past. That makes us very proud of Pap-pap and all that he has done.

Finally, we head back home for a BIG Easter brunch full of all my favorite foods. We all talk about where we want to go for vacation this year. Will it be the mountains? The beach? Or maybe even an amusement park?! There are so many places to choose from! WOW!!

It was the last day of school today. We had a party to say good-bye for the summer. It was fun! My teacher handed out report cards, and gave each of us a special notebook that he wrote in. Then, we all took turns writing things to each other in them. I gave everyone my phone number, so maybe we can still talk over the summer.

I’m very happy that school is out, because I can play all summer long! But, I am also sort of sad. I already had one friend move when his daddy was sent to a new base, and I am scared that more might leave before school starts again. I talked to Mommy and Daddy about how I felt. He reminded me that I have my cool book with all my friends funny words to read. Mommy said I also have my memories, just in case they do move away. They always know how to help me feel better. For now, I will stay excited about all the ideas for our vacation, and see what my summer will bring.

Craft Projects Mentioned in the Story:

Coloring Easter eggs: Instead of the egg coloring kits, try using food colorings. The directions are on the back of most boxes, and by combining colors, the number of new colors you can get is unending!

Butterflies and Flowers: Take a paper coffee filter, and lay it flat on some paper so your table doesn’t get ruined! Drop one drop of food coloring at a time scattering it over the filter. Once finished, take a pipe cleaner (or twist-tie), and squeeze the center for the butterfly or the bottom to make the flower.

Easter basket: Wash out a plastic milk jug (one with a handle). Using scissors, cut away part of the front and top of the jug, leaving the handle. Use anything you want to decorate the outside. Fill the inside.
