- The Best of Friends
Oscar the striped kitten lived in a cozy house with a little brown puppy named Jordan. They were the best of friends!
One day while looking out the window, Oscar said, “It sure looks fun out there!”
“Oh, it is!” replied Jordan. “There is so much room to run and jump, and everything is so different and exciting!”
So, since he had put it that way, Oscar decided to go outside with Jordan for the day for a hike.
When they got to the edge of their yard there was a small forest, so they ventured in. The grass ticked Oscar’s tummy and the mud squished between Jordan’s paws. The two of them ran and jumped over each other. They climbed on logs and looked up at the tall, tall trees. Oh, they were having a wonderful time!
All of the sudden, Oscar and Jordan stopped with a cold flash of fright! They didn’t know what to do … coming towards them was a small black creature with lots of legs! They ran and jumped on a log, thinking that the creepy-crawly creature couldn’t climb. “What is that?” Oscar asked.
“I don’t know,” Jordan answered, “but I don’t think I want to play with her. We’ll be safe up here. Maybe it didn’t see us.”
Then, to their surprise, the creepy-crawly creature climbed right up onto the log beside them. They had no idea what would happen next!!
As they hopped off the log to run away, they heard a tiny squeaky voice say, “Please don’t go. I have nobody to play with, and no-one to help me find a name.”
Oscar and Jordan turned around with a scared look on their faces. “Why do you want to play with us?” they asked. “We live in a house and play with toys. You live out here where it is so different.”
The creepy-crawly thought for a minute, then replied, “If we play out here, I can show you new things to see and games to play And maybe you can help me find a name.”
Oscar and Jordan quickly forgot their fears and returned to the log. They were happy and excited to help a new friend. “How can we help you find a name?” they both asked, “We don’t even know what kind of animal you are.”
“That’s easy,” she answered, ”I am a spider.” And with that, the friends set off through the woods to see what they could find. “Maybe we can find something to remind me of myself.”
The first thing they came across was a babbling brook full of fish. But when they asked the fish for a name idea, they just flipped their tails, because fish under water can’t talk.
Then they saw a butterfly bouncing in the flowers, so they asked him, “Do you have any ideas for a name for our new spider friend?”
“I am not sure,” he said. ”I don’t think I have ever seen you around here before. And, since I fly in the air, and you scamper on the ground, I just don’t think I can help. I am sorry.” Then he flew away.
After walking for a while, Jordan stopped. “Why haven’t I seen you around these woods before?” he asked the spider.
“Well,“ she began, “some spiders are nocturnal, which means we only come out at night. But I decided to come out today, because when it is dark it is hard to find friends.”
Just then, Oscar got a wonderful idea! “Why don’t we name you Moonlight,” he said, “because the moon is nocturnal, too!!”
Everybody loved the idea, and Moonlight was thrilled to finally have a name! “Oh, I don’t know how to thank you!” she said excitedly.
“All you have to do,” they said, “ is come out and play with us once in a while. We really liked playing with you!”
And that’s just what they did. The kitten, the puppy and the creepy-crawly creature remained the best of friends!!
